We know that over-protecting our hearing by wearing an earplug full-time will only make the symptoms of tinnitus and hyperacusis worse because of how the perception of sound levels is processed in the brain. That being said, to desensitize you to normal levels of sound (like the clatter of plates) a slow process of reclassifying sounds as "safe" or "neutral" is needed. Listening to a comfortable level of music therapy is also a good idea, as long as it is a pleasant and calming experience. The low-level music should help distract your attention (and brain) away from the tinnitus. Slowly decreasing the amount of time wearing an earplug is a good idea, as well as slowly allowing yourself to hear more of your annoying sounds by reducing the seal of the earplug (i.e., slowly reducing the complete seal the earplug has in the ear canal by small amounts each day/week to allow more sound into the ear.) In contrast, the fast removal of an earplug in a quiet room will most likely result in the perception that the tinnitus is louder. We avoid this by going slowly and by having a contrasting sound in the background (like music) that is comforting for the patient to listen to. Other techniques like deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation can also help to calm the over-stimulated nervous system that results from these symptoms. Teaching our patients this desensitization process is much easier in person, but I hope some of these ideas might help you!

Trying to find CBT thats specific to this problem isnt easy though. Most CBT is about depression, mental health, anxiety, mood etc. I find it hard to relate the generic CBT to Misophonia as its a dissorder with the way i hear sounds and how it affects me, my mind deals with certain sounds this way, its almost like saying CBT will help change the way people who are colourblind will see colours.

Hello Marcia, thank you for reaching out. The tinnitus examples on our website are for reference purposes and not what we recommend for sound therapy. A better sound therapy would be something that sounds soothing to you, such as an ocean wave or a thunderstorm playing softly in the background throughout much of your day. Ok, so here is my story. About a year and 1/2 ago, I had prostate cancer, and the treatment for that was to have 28 days straight of radiation on the lower part of my body. After that, I really starting having problems with my hearing; just as talked about in the comments above, the noise of plates and silverware I cannot stand, as loud voices, child screaming or talking load. I used to listen to my tv at like the volume of 12-13, not I have to have it at 6 to not go wild. I do have hearing aids that are supposed to help with the high pitch sounds, but they really don't help. I have 28db earplugs that I wear most of the time, to help eliminate the loud sounds that bother me. So how do I get you to help me? Is there a cost involved? This is the 1st time I ever seen someone mention they could help with hyperacusis. I am really interested in your response to my post here. thanks...Marvin

I’ve had tinnitus for five years now, and I’ve never known silence since. The idea of it seems foreign and unimaginable to me now. I can cope with it, but I know there are others who can’t, and I feel for them. Truly an awful condition. This is a fairly accurate representation of what it sounds like to me. If you’re reading this and don’t suffer from it, please protect your hearing. For me it wasn’t a gradual onset, it was something I started hearing abruptly and it has never ceased. I remember the moment it happened. Let the fear of this torturous reality motivate you to take more proactive measures to protect your hearing from this hellish affliction. There is no cure, I’ve been told if you were to cut the auditory nerve that connects your ears to your brain making you deaf, you’d only be left with the ringing. There is no solution or roadmap to addressing this.

    • @Sound_Relief_Tinnitus_Hearing

We believe in a desensitization approach for hyperacusis since we have seen it work for many patients. Also, we live in a noisy world and avoiding all sound typically leads to social isolation and possibly even depression.

Excessive wax buildup in the ears can block your natural hearing. This blockage can create a temporary sensitivity, especially right after it is cleared. Have you ever been in a dark movie theater, and then when you walk outside, the brightness almost makes your eyes water? This is because of the immediate contrast, and your brain needs time to adjust. The same type of sensitivity can happen with hearing when your ear is blocked with wax and then is resolved. Luckily, there are many great ways to manage this. Please reach out to a local audiologist for help!
